MTN South Africa has collaborated with the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board to address the escalating issue of theft and vandalism of cellphone tower infrastructure nationwide. This partnership aims to empower Community Policing Forums to combat such crimes, particularly the theft of batteries and cables from cell towers in various regions of South Africa.
The primary objective is to safeguard network tower infrastructure, minimizing disruptions and enhancing the overall connectivity experience for subscribers. MTN SA's CEO, Charles Molapisi, emphasized the utilization of technology to prevent and reduce incidents of vandalism and theft at cell towers. The collaboration seeks to leverage the capabilities of technology to create a safer environment within communities.
The partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board aims to implement preventive measures using technology and community involvement. Molapisi stressed the importance of seizing the current crisis as an opportunity for technology-driven organizations like MTN to collaborate with local communities and Community Policing Forums to combat criminal activities and infrastructure damage.
In the initial phase of the partnership, being implemented in Soweto, a command center equipped with laptops, printers, CCTV, and Wi-Fi points has been established to collect data and detect criminal activity. Community Policing Forum members will also receive new uniforms and equipment, including panic buttons and handcuffs, to enhance their readiness for any situation.
MTN SA plans to extend the initiative's benefits in Phase 2, focusing on generating shared value across the communities where MTN operates. This collaborative effort aims to create a more secure environment and strengthen the resilience of network infrastructure against theft and vandalism.
