It is a conventional thing in Nigeria to sell telecom frequencies between operators. But today, there is no need to wait for an auction organized by the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) to fulfill the need of technical resources, confirmed Olusola Teniola, president of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON). However he refrained from revealing the current transactions given the highly strategic nature of the latter.
According to the head of ATCON, the number of people accessing telecom services is improving thanks to the secondary market for telecom frequencies. "There are some parts of the country that do not have telecommunications services because the operators who have the frequencies do not want to deploy services there. But with operators willing to deploy services in these areas, they can buy the resource from the owner and cover its area with telecom services, "said Olusola Teniola.
In view of its objective to make spectrum allocation faster and more efficient, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has authorized the sale of frequencies between telecom operators in the first quarter of 2018. However, in spite of the freedom it has insured, the NCC retains control over the transaction between two telecom operators.
