Telecommunications operator Vodacom Tanzania announced that M-Pesa, its mobile financial services platform, has expanded its international money transfer (IMT) service to eight new countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) where its customers can send and receive money.

Telecommunications operator Safaricom Ethiopia launched its mobile network in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Following a series of successful customer network pilots in ten cities, the company is holding a national launch ceremony to mark the official start of its operations in the country.

A total of R340 million will be spent by Vodacom Central Region this financial year on expanding broadband coverage in deep rural areas, upgrading base station sites and improving network resilience. This investment will drive inclusive digital access across the region as part of the network’s commitment to ensuring connectivity for all.

Orange and the German Development Cooperation have inaugurated an “Orange Digital Center” at Monrovia, a digital ecosystem entirely dedicated to the development of digital skills and innovation. The event was attended by the highest political and administrative authorities from Liberia; representatives of Germany in Liberia; members of the Orange Liberia board; and representatives of Orange Middle East and Africa.

Vodacom has achieved 2.4 Gbps throughput on a live site, a first for South Africa. Trials were conducted using a commercial smartphone and Vodacom's Midrand campus's commercial base station. Compared to the average fiber-to-the-home connection, the record speed is approximately 100 times faster.
