Thulagano Segokgo, Botswana’s Minister of Transport and Communications, expressed the country's intentions to establish cooperation agreements with Angola in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. During a meeting with Angola's Minister, Mário Augusto da Silveira Oliveira, Botswana highlighted its objectives of interconnecting with Angola through a terrestrial fiber optic line and utilizing Angola's AngoSat-2 telecom satellite services.

This initiative is in line with Botswana's National Broadband Strategy (NBS), introduced in 2018 to drive digital transformation. The NBS aims to provide high-quality, affordable broadband connectivity to every citizen, business, and community. Recently, the government launched the SmartBots project, aiming to grant Internet access to 500 villages across the country.

Successful negotiations for the fiber optic interconnection and utilization of AngoSat-2 satellite capacity could accelerate mobile service adoption in Botswana, benefiting its 4.2 million mobile subscribers and 2.6 million high-speed Internet subscribers, as reported by the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA).
