The Angolan government is set to roll out 50 new free internet access points nationwide by the end of October, according to Marcos Damião, deputy director of the technical area at the National Institute for the Promotion of the Information Society (INFOSI). This ambitious initiative aims to facilitate access to online academic resources for students in underserved areas and promote information exchange.
In urban regions, the program will collaborate with service providers such as Angola Telecom, TV Cabo, Internet Technologies Angola (ITA), UNITEL and Zap Fibras. For suburban areas, the plan involves deploying access points utilizing the VSAT (Internet by Satellite) system, each offering a 100-megabyte capacity over a 100-meter radius.
This initiative is a crucial component of the "Angola Online" program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS). Already, 127 internet access points have been established throughout Angola.
The overarching goal of this project is to enhance the accessibility of internet services and expedite the digital transformation of various sectors within the national economy, with a particular focus on education.
