In response to the intensifying competition in the AI landscape, Apple is actively working on creating its own large-language artificial intelligence models internally. The tech giant has established a chatbot service, informally referred to as "Apple GPT".
To bolster its position in the AI space and compete with industry giants like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Bard and Meta's Llama, Apple has built its own internal infrastructure. This framework, codenamed "Ajax," was initially developed last year and is currently hosted on Google Cloud. Although access to the chatbot is currently limited within Apple, there are speculations that the company might make a significant AI announcement as early as next year.
Apple's move signifies its strategic venture into the generative AI domain, particularly after the resounding success of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has garnered widespread popularity among users. This success has led to the emergence of competing AI chatbots from Google and Microsoft.
Despite Cupertino's infrequent use of the term "artificial intelligence," the company does leverage AI across its products, most notably through the widely used voice assistant, Siri.
Earlier this year, Apple took a notable step by prohibiting its employees from using ChatGPT internally and Microsoft-owned GitHub Copilot, an AI code-writing assistant. Furthermore, Apple's acquisition of two AI startups in 2020 suggests the company's long-term plans to integrate AI into various core products and applications.
During a quarterly earnings call, CEO Tim Cook stated that Apple intends to "weave" AI into its products while also offering a word of caution about the technology's future.
